Any R/C enthusiast who races regularly knows who I’m talking about, the rare breed of R/C racer who just drives you insane. I am relatively new to the racing scene, but not by any means am I new to the hobby. I recently started racing with my schools R/C club at a local track. Racing is a blast and for me is a culmination of all things good about the hobby. Picture the novice racer at his first race night experiencing some of the things I see too often at the track.

A track regular (we’ll call him “Racer X”) with an ego the size of the track itself, is standing front and center atop the drivers stand as a race begins. The race gets underway and the first sign of trouble involves Racer X. A string of negative commentary rains down from the drivers stand as the marshal frantically work to right the cars. As his car is tended to last, another barrage of choice words comes from above, this time directed at the marshal. Things proceed relatively smoothly after the first incident until Racer X comes up on some lap traffic. Yelling out leader as he whips around other slower drivers, Racer X is unintentionally blocked by another driver. The driver that blocked Racer X hears about it both the moment it happens and then again after the race.

In my short racing experience I have seen far too much of “Racer X” for my liking. I can see how a novice racer could go to the track for the first time and be on the receiving end of some negative comments and be turned off of racing for good. When I see things like this happen it really bums me out. One of the most detrimental things we can do for the health of the hobby is to discourage people from racing and participating in organized events.

Let’s be honest here, whether we like it or not, we’re all adults playing with toy cars. Therefore we should act like adults and play nice with each other. The racing scene should be one of respect and good natured competition, and almost everyone who is involved in the racing scene recognizes and follows those principles, showing respect and acceptance to everyone, even newcomers. It’s the few people who seem to think they can play by a different set of rules that can be very harmful to the hobby. People who are just entering into R/C or just trying racing for the first time are just as valuable to the hobby and to the atmosphere of the track as the guy with 20 years of experience. So don’t be intimidated by the Racer X at your local track, go out and enjoy the hobby! And for the love of R/C, don’t be “that guy”!

These days, big bore shocks are all the rage when it comes to dialing your suspension. Paul Sinclair, of X Factory RC, came up with an interesting solution for having all the benefits of big bore springs without the added weight of big bore shock bodies. He claims that using big bore springs on a standard size shock body is the best overall setup for shock performance. The idea is that big bore springs can be placed on smaller bore shocks in order to prevent scraping. Scraping is a very common issue when it comes to standard size shocks, which can result in an inconsistent feel. Smaller springs buckle as they compress which can allow them to actually touch the shock bodies and cause friction. Because big bore springs have a much larger diameter, they are much less prone to scape than their smaller counterparts. I can personally vouch for this method as I have been very impressed with my t4.1’s handling after doing this simple mod. My shocks feel very smooth.

Now, there is one issue with putting a big bore spring onto a smaller shock such as the Associated V2—The spring is too large for the shock collar and spring retainer. This can easily be remedied by using Traxxas part number 3768. This bag of parts has a larger spring retainer and shock collar, which will fit the big bores perfectly. A small amount of demeling will be needed to fit the spring retainer over the associated V2 shock end, but this only takes seconds. For further details about how to do this conversion, click on the X Factory YouTube link below and skip forward to 3:34 for the specific details.

Note if you are unfamiliar with big bore springs for stadium trucks, I would suggest trying the following springs as your starting point:

Front: Losi Green 22 front springs

Rear: Losi Yellow 22T rear springs

If you’ve been reading around at all lately, you probably noticed that the RC rally scene is growing really fast. With the release of the new Traxxas 1/10 Rally, I think that it’s safe to say that rally is here to stay for a while. Will rally ever be as popular as short course? Probably not. But I think that it presents some really interesting opportunities for RC racing and bashing.

First off, RC rally racing has a lot of potential. It’s definitely one of the most stellar full size racing styles in my opinion. I think that the terrain required to have a really awesome rally course is much easier to create than the ‘super cross’ style that most off road tracks require. All you really need is some gravel or loose dust, some pipes for the lanes, and maybe some gradual dirt mounds for modest jumps that the rallys can handle. This might make it easier and more plausible for hobby shops to make tracks due to shear simplicity. I could also see rally racing classes taking over parking lot racing. Why not drop in some simple wooden jumps for the rally guys right after mod touring? I could see those touring guys getting jealous of that rally class airtime. The possibilities for a rally racing class are endless.

From a basher’s perspective, on-road or touring cars really aren’t that exciting for the most part. You can’t jump, you can’t hit cracks, you can’t hit debris the size of pebbles, and you can’t drive off road at all. Not the case with rally! All of these conditions are drivable, and probably make bashing more enjoyable if they are encountered. Suddenly, a low center of gravity car that looks like a real one becomes much more appealing to bashers.

I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of one of these new rally cars. The introduction of new classes has proven to be a very healthy thing for the RC industry. Short course attracted so many new enthusiasts because of scale looks and performance, and I believe that rally could do just the same, which is really exciting. What do you guys think? Your opinions about this up and coming class are encouraged!

I was flying over mounds of snow and patches of grass, wide open and testing the C rating of my lithium polymer pack, when it all went wrong! We all have horror stories, stories that involve carnage, yard sales, etc! We’ve seen the videos and read the highly exaggerated stories on the forums.

I love hearing these RC stories. The hobby that we have is just incredible isn’t it? There is something about an RC car careening across a parking lot, jumping sky high, or climbing a tree ending with a sick backflip that has the ability to make just about anyone smile. In fact, I think that this is the one thing that attracts me to the hobby the most. These simple thrills are an escape from the rest of the world. When my finger grabs the throttle of my pistol grip radio, I’m truly catapulted with my RC car over a jump that clears the gap between the stresses of engineering school and simple, pure fun.

The very beginning of my RC story began when I was in middle school, maybe 13 years old. I was exposed to an RC18T one weekend with some family friends in Michigan. My friends were driving it on a sandy path, drifting around like a rally car, showing off the little beast’s 4wd. I was absolutely stunned by how fast that this little guy could go! I wanted one. Badly.

Well, come February, guess what was on the top of my birthday list? An RC car. Not just any, but a “Hobby quality” one.

So on my birthday we headed over to the local HobbyTown USA to pick up my first car, an Associated RC10 T4. And that’s where it all started for me! In fact, I still have (and race) this car today! Now I’m a 20 year old college student completely addicted to RC.

Suddenly, without warning my mini E-Revo SMACKED into a fire hydrant at full speed. I hit it dead on! I just knew this must have caused catastrophic damage, so I didn’t even try to back up and drive off. Boy was I right! Upon checking vitals, I realized that my car had literally broken in half. In fact, the only thing that was holding the front suspension to the rest of the chassis was the servo link and shocks… “CRAAAP”. Of course, if you know anything about me, you’d know that I had it running again in just a few days, except $40 dollars poorer than I was before the crash.

Great News Everyone,

As a part of my new podcast project I just had a chance to interview the Director of a little known RC documentary called Carpet Racers: A crash course. The man but hundreds and hundreds of hours together filming all over the nation to put together what I think is a really interesting film. The key point, at least how I see it is not to necessarily expect it to be an “RC Movie” rather, a great insight into the Hobby in general, all the hard work and dedication that goes into it as well as a lot of the struggles we all face.

I just watched it again the other night in preparation for the interview and remembered how fun of a movie it was, it not only shows an interesting take on the lesser known group of “carpet racers” but it also does an amazing job telling a really fun story. They sent us just a few copies to sell and we are one of less than 10 places nationwide that I know of that has made the DVD available.

We have just 30 copies right now but I launched the new store section just for this. My suggestion is, if you like RC, or like documentaries in general this is a great film. I had a lot of fun watching it and whether its for your own collection or a gift for a friend or family member this DVD delivers exactly what it promises, a fun look and the trials and tribulations we all face as individuals as well as together as a Hobby. Here is check out the trailer and then score your copy in our store today before we run out, Im keeping one for myself, that’s for sure.

Check Out Our Store Now

We have decided to run a second episode of the RC NightMare “RC Show”. This time around we will be spending a little more time on Q&A, we have fixed the spammers, and even upgraded to HD streams. We will maybe, be giving away a few more items but we don’t really want to focus on it, our loyal fans have asked for the show to be more technical and that is just what we will try to do. If you have any questions or topic ideas, post them up down below and we will try to fit them in. If We can keep thing steady I will try to get Brandon online for a third. Also, please do us a favor and make sure you RSVP to the event at the link below. Just click “attending” if you are, and if you have RC friends, have them do it too.
