Chances are over time you will be upgrading your gear – from truck parts to electronics. Or as you acquire new equipment, you suddenly find that you now have more than you need of RTR radio sets, stock servos, escs, etc… Now, it is always a good idea to have a few extra components on hand just in case your main part breaks down. However, for the most part, if you’ve upgraded from the stock equipment to aftermarket parts you aren’t likely to have a need for the stock parts in the same capacity.
So then what to do with your old parts? You could mass your army of neglected parts or toss them – neither of which adds any fun to anyone unless you like to collect parts ….hmmm…
Here are some better alternatives for those old/stock parts:
You can give away those extra bits. Some tracks have a ‘donations’ box where you can drop off your working equipment for other people to make use of. These will help out someone who needs a quick fix or someone who isn’t fortunate enough to have the latest and greatest. Or give to someone you know who could make use of the stuff. The best thing is if it could help someone have some more fun with the hobby.
Sell, Sell, Sell
You could try to turn the items into cash by posting them items on Ebay or Craig’s List or something like that. First spend a few moments searching for the parts you want to sell and see if any are available/ have sold. This will give you an idea of what you can expect for your items. Depending on the condition/demand for the item you could be sitting on a goldmine! Be aware that some sites like Ebay charge a listing fee and collect a percentage of whatever you make. Another place you can sell your stuff is at the local track to fellow racers – it’ll be a good idea to ask the establishment for their rules (if any) regarding this. The great thing about being able to sell your extra stuff is you can turn around and ‘reinvest’ the proceeds into your hobby. Allowing you to play for longer!
My favorite of them all, repurpose! If you are the tinkering type this will probably be second nature. Just because the parts come from a truck does not mean it can’t be used in a boat or whatever. Many items like the radio, ESC, servo, motor are completely reusable. Just be aware that they may not be the optimal part and may need some jiggering to get working correctly but hey, it’s a discovery. If you have some ideas for a project that could use a servo/radio these are excellent parts to have on hand. Just think of normal everyday things and imagine how much better they could be with a remote controlled servo attached!
It is wise to keep a few parts around as replacements for your RC upgrades just in case they break down but if you think you have too many, it may be time to decide what to do with them all.
