new battery help

i went to the LHS today and picked up a speedpack 8.4V 7-CELL HUMP Ni-MH 5100 mAH battery for my Traxxas Stampede XL-5 they said it should be at least double the stock battery time and im sure they said it should last at least 30 minutes but i timed it and it lasted only like 16 minutes 20 seconds is that bad? does it get better? please help me

well run time really varies there are lots and lots of things that can affect run time. what terrain your running gearing, how your running, condition of the bearings in the car.... lots of things can affect this. as far as the battery lasting longer it wont getting any better unless you change gearing or your driving style

alright thanks ill try some things cause i really want the batteries to last longer than 16 min :/ its a stock stampede nothing changed on it except the new battery i just hope i didn't waste my money on it

i dont know if you feel like taking the jump to lipo. but its not as expensive as it was 2 years ago. you can get a charger and battery for 80-100$ a really good setup to and a 5000mah lipo will last longer, or will feel like it lasts longer..

the nimh is getting low run times because what happens is the power slowly starts to decrease ones you start using it, and the battery might now be dead but there is not enough power to push your car or there is so little power that it feels dead. but with a lipo the power stays constant the whole time your driving it, and then it plummets(if this happens the battery voltage gets to low and the battery dies) but people get low voltage cut offs which prevent that drop which hurts the battery, so if your looking for more power and run times. hello lipo

Nimh can benefit from a break in. Install a smaller pinion on your stampede. Charge the battery at a slow rate, <1C. Make sure to drain it all the way down when you run it in the truck. Do this 5 times making sure the battery does not get hot.

This process will allow all the cells in the pack to "balance" giving you more power and longer run times.

i don't want a lipo really i have seen picutes of it burning cars to the ground and stuff so i dont really want to take that risk :/

Yeah you should make sure your comfortable and understand the risks before investing.

That being said I've been using lipos for over ten years without a single problem. I've never touched a Nimh since. You won't either =]

Your battery might not be getting long runtimes from the stock gearing. Maybe if you lower the gear ratio it will keep cooler temps and have longer runtimes. If that doesn't work, tell your LHS to see if it was a bad battery. Sometimes batteries don't come with balanced cells.

my motor is dead now anyways :/ maybe it wasnt the battery but ill try some gearing or go brushless cause i could gear it down i just dont wanna lose speed
