New to RC so please bear with me. Can somebody please explain how electric motors are rated. Lower KV is better or worse or just different?
Lower kv will have more torque. What are you looking for?
I was wondering the same thing, it was all really confusing. But then someone told me this:
What "kv" means
here's the run down:
High KV:
huge amp draw
has to be geared down (looses revs)
have to be a HAWK on the temps so it doesn't overheat
sucks packs down real quick
it is extreeeemely fast though
Low KV:
lower amp draw
you can gear up and keep temps down
don't have to be a hawk on the temps
keeps packs goin nice and long
it is slower than the higher KV systems but the torque can be insane

Found this quick ref guide on RC Car action.... Less turns or higher kv the faster rotation, less torque
But with all different types of applications it comes down to how well you can gear it and what your going to be using it for!

Gearing is pretty simple to understand....
If hot gear your pinion up teeth or your spur gear down
If cold then go down in your pinion and up with your spur
Try to always start with a ball park temp/speed by changing your pinion first then fine tune with your spur gear
